Pioneering Spirit

Pioneering Spirit, the world’s largest ship needed a way to stay online at all times, whether it’s out in the ocean on a decommissioning project or moored by the shore. Having connectivity is crucial for the safety of the crew, amongst other things. So a solution where they can make use of all available connections is of paramount importance.

  • Stay online at all times.
  • Highest level of internet reliability, scalability and flexibility.
  • Easy to use and to manage.

  • Balance 710 to prioritise a point-to-point Wi-Fi, 2x 4G LTE/3G via 2x MAX HD2 IP67, VSAT, and finally tethered data from an Iridium satellite phone.
  • MAX HD2 IP67 – one is placed on each side of the vessel and are kept at over 300 meters apart to maximise the signal reception.
  • When the vessel is at shore, it will be connected to point-to-point Wi-Fi. Once it leaves shore Wi-Fi coverage, 4G LTE will take over until they are out of reach of the cellular towers. At which point, VSAT takes over, with the Iridium satellite phone as an additional failover option.

  • To use multiple technologies e.g. Wi-Fi to VSAT to 4G LTE/3G for internet.
  • Always-on, seamless internet by automatic failover between connections
  • Capacity to provide further resilience with redundant SIM slots
  • IP67 all-weather solution to withstand the harsh environment out at sea.

“With InControl 2, we were able to keep a close eye on the installation process. The remote web admin access feature was very useful for fine-tuning network configurations.”

“Pioneering Spirit will considerably reduce the amount of offshore work associated with platform installation and decommissioning, shifting the work onshore where it is safer and more cost effective.”

With gross tonnage measuring in at 403,342 GT and a lifting capacity of 48,000 tons, the Pioneering Spirit is by far world’s largest crane vessel. Its length measures 382 meters – same as the Empire State Building in height.

The Peplink advantage

While the main reason for choosing Peplink is because of the ability to prioritise WAN connections and failover between them, there were other considerations at play. InControl 2 for example, offers up convenient cloud-based remote access and monitoring and powerful GPS tracking features. While not yet in use, the redundant SIM slot on the MAX HD2 is also another factor, offering the flexibility that Holland and team have been looking for. The fact that the MAX HD2 has an IP rating of 67 means that it is perfect for the harsh seas. Peplink’s agile and persistent support left an impression with Holland – making good products is just half the battle. Keeping customers reassured is an ongoing effort, one that we commit to every day.
